What’s in your Chocolates?

The purpose of this post is to bring awareness and educate on harm reduction. We do not take any responsibility for any harm that comes from this knowledge. This is the opinion of a writer. Please don’t try this at home.

Cannabis users have probably heard of or seen a bad vape pen, fake edible, pre rolls with stems, pine sap doped cannabis oil…you are most likely aware of counterfeit cannabis products. It is pretty plain for everyone to see how easy it is to cheat with processing cannabis. We have seen the news and the horror stories, so why the mushroom edible boom? All of this sudden trust with processed mushroom goods? People are buying professionally packaged chocolates, gummies, tinctures, etc off of Instagram like the old Vape cartridge days in huge bulk.

(Quick answer is because of prohibition and it never stopped in the cannabis world)

Okay big scary paragraph, so what? This article isn’t to dissuade trust between real cultivators and their patients. Quite the opposite, without a legalization structure, community accountability is the only way to keep this safe right now. There are still going to be people trying to make an extra buck against your best interest.

So how are they going to cheat you? A common method is to simply use less mushrooms in the edible than claimed. One can also make false claims about psilocybin percentages, unless they get it tested ,which most don’t. Processors can only technically claim the weight of fruiting bodies going in. We’ve seen claims with improper strain names and genetics, similar to the last point, we can’t tell without potency tests.

Three ways all while still using mushrooms. If you don’t just get your money stolen over the internet, and the pack actually ships… Other ways of counterfeiting would be using synthetic compounds like 4-ACO-DMT, nbome, 2cb, LSD, mdma, and many many more. The most common and easy to get a hold of was patented under the name “psilacetin” with the chemical structure 4-ACO-DMT. It is a semi synthetic ester of psilocin. Acids, like stomach acid, turn it into psilocin. There are some reports of the molecule itself being psychoactive as well.

This is going to be our main topic of discussion due to the ease of procurement.

Michelle Janikian from Double Blind Magazine wrote: “The legality of 4-acetoxy-DMT is somewhat complicated and exists in a legal grey area in many countries. That’s because 4-AcO is not included in any international drug schedules, such as the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances. In the United States, 4-AcO is unscheduled, but if you’re caught with the off white powder, there’s still a chance you could be charged under the Federal Analogue Act, a section of the Controlled Substances Act that allows any compound that is “substantially similar” to a Schedule I or II substance to be prosecuted as such if it’s meant for human consumption. And so, because psilacetin is an analogue of psilocin,  a Schedule I substance, the manufacture, distribution or possession could be a punishable offense. Although, according to the Third Wave, “Prosecutions are practically unheard of.””

4-ACO-DMT is reportedly very similar in effects to psilocybin or DMT depending on dosage. It does have interactions between stimulants, tramadol, lithium, and other psychedelics.

While 4-ACO-DMT itself has proven to be of minimal harm in the mainstream, we still urge caution as this drug was basically shelved after it was discovered with very little study conducted on the molecule.

So how do we as consumers gain trust in a cultivator that has chocolates available?

In conclusion, unless someone can source chocolates straight from a trusted cultivator, leave the Instagram chocolates on Instagram.
