Spore features: Psilocybe cyanescens spores are purple-brown to purple-gray and heavy in deposit.
Cap / Stem features: Wavy Cap mushrooms have caps that curl in a wavy shape, hence their name. They have thin, white stems.
Lineage: Originally foraged in Seattle, Washington by ITW’s founder.
Fruiting Season: Most common from late summer up until mid-winter when frost begins to stunt their growth.
Habitat / Distribution: Enormous flushes can be found in woody debris, leaf litter, wood chips, and surrounding grasses. Ps. cyanescens can be found growing in coastal cities on the West Coast, from northern Seattle down to San Francisco.
Microscopic features: Wavy Cap spores appear purple-brown to purple-grey. 9-12 X 6-8 micrometers, elliptical, smooth, with an apical pore;
Fun fact: They have been known to colonize and produce fruits from entire alder logs.
