Psilocybe ochraceocentrata, aff. Natalensis is a newly classified magic mushroom species discovered in sub-Saharan Africa. A groundbreaking study in 2024 discovered that Ps. Natalensis genetics, which were beloved and widely circulated throughout the community, were not Natalensis at all, but were in fact a distinct species called Psilocybe ochraceocentrata (or Ochras for short).

The 2024 study revealed fascinating details about the origins of magic mushrooms as a whole, and the common ancestry of Cubensis and Ochras mushrooms. As close relatives, Psilocybe cubensis, and Ps. ochraceocentrata share similar attributes. Both grow in the wild on manure or dung, and both thrive in a similar climate and temperature range.
