Psilocybe mexicana var. Jalisco is a unique psilocybe strain with rich history dating back over 2000 years. One of the earliest mushroom species used in mazateca rituals, psilocybe mexicana is still used today all over the world, in both truffle and full fruiting body form. In Amsterdam this strain is commonplace in smartshops in the form of refrigerated truffles. During our last trip to Amsterdam, ITW and our friends agreed this was the favorite of all truffle varieties we tried, including the classic Pollock Tampanensis. Ps. mexicana prefer manure rich grasslands, giving them the name, "the mexican liberty cap" by Paul Stamets. This is the true "set and forget" species.

Huautla Cubensis Spore Syringes are from a sacred strain of Ps. cubensis, originally foraged in the indigenous city of Huautla de Jimenez, Oaxaca, Mexico. Huautla is a magical place, where mushroom ceremonies and divination are an integral part of the local culture to this day. Huautla is also the home of the famous mushroom curandera, Maria Sabina, who inadvertently introduced the West to magic mushrooms and their spiritual, ceremonial component in the 1950s. 

Huautla cubensis mushrooms are just as beautiful as they are mystical, with light golden brown caps that begin to curl as they release spores. The spores themselves are blackish-purple and average in deposit.

Mexican Dutch King Spore Syringes are from a prolific strain of Psilocybe cubensis that’s extremely popular in Amsterdam. Also known as “Dutch King” or “MDK,” these mushrooms were originally foraged in Mexico and then propagated in the Netherlands.

Mexican Dutch King mushrooms are one of our favorites here at ITW because of the ginormous size of their very potent caps. MDK mushroom caps are also unique because they’re a very dark, caramel brown with a sunburst texture that forms a white ring around the edge when they fan out. Mexican Dutch King spores are a purple color and extremely heavy in deposit, while their stems are big, thick and hollow.

Pakalensis spore syringes are from a mystical strain of Psilocybe cubensis, originally foraged near the sacred Mayan ruins of Palenque in the jungle of Chiapas, Mexico. It was found by Pekon Metsa in 2013, who then gave it to Earth’s Tongue for distribution. It was named after the Mayan king of Palenque, Pakal the Great, who ruled from 615 to 685, a time of great prosperity for the region.

Pakalensis cubensis mushrooms have big beautiful fruits with golden brown, almost starburst caps that can curl up a little bit around the edges. Their stems are pretty solid and white, and their spores are unique because although they are light in deposit, they are a rusty brown color.
